Lawn Care Tips

A well-maintained, weed-free lawn is a cut above the rest. How can you make sure your lawn is perfect?

The following tips for lawn care will help you make the most of the work by minimizing water use, fertilizing the grass, protecting against bugs and diseases, keeping it clean and healthy, making it easier to mow without damaging your grass seedlings, dealing with weeds that may be sprouting up on your lawn or garden beds, keeping your equipment working properly, etc. as well as preventing problems like over-watering which can lead to summer mould issues.

Do you like to keep the lawn looking good and fresh? Gardening and lawn care tips for all seasons. We've got you covered from choosing the right plants for your area to tips on watering and fertilizing.

We do not want to confuse you with all the information, as there is a sea of misinformation. The fact is, there are a lot of garden maintenance tips out there, but they tend to address tree pruning and fertilizing, not lawn care. Lawn care isn’t as often covered by experts – which is a shame because it’s a topic that can be used to help you take control of your lawn and make it healthier and more beautiful.

Here are some tips that have worked well for other gardeners:

Keep grass low: The height at which the grass is bent will impact how long it takes to grow back after mowing.

Avoid overwatering: Watering too much during the summer will lead to excessive fertilizer use later on in the season.

Plants for erosion control: Many plants like dandelions or mustard plants can help prevent soil erosion.

Manage weeds: Weed control can be difficult for city dwellers who don't want their yards cluttered with weeds or plants that compete with the forest for resources.

Landscape Design and Maintenance Tips

With so many variables to consider, it's easy to get overwhelmed with lawn maintenance — especially if you don't yet have a lawncare service.

If you don't know your 'ideal' yard, your lawncare services will likely be less than ideal. We've put together this list of landscaping and garden maintenance tips, which will help you avoid common problems and keep your yards looking great! We offer a wide range of services including power raking and lawn fertilization, lawn overseeding and topdressing, lawn mowing and garden edging, weed and moss control, hedge trimming and cutting.

While there are many different steps involved with keeping your yard well-maintained, here are a few basic tips that we recommend:

  1. Choose the right plants for your area.
  2. Avoid over-watering and fertilizing.
  3. Don't let weeds grow too long!
  4. Keep weeds out of your flowerbeds and borders!
  5. Be careful of mulch! If it doesn't break down naturally (and doesn't kill off the weeds), don't use it! You may have to use chemical weed control products or hire someone to do the work for you, but do so only if it's indispensable (for example, if you have a large yard that requires a lot of work). Remember that chemicals can harm children or pets.

Trees and Shrubs for Your Property

How do you keep your lawn looking its best? We've got you covered from selecting the right plants for your area to tips on watering and fertilizing.

In Ontario, the term “landscape” is a bit of a misnomer because it implies that what is in the landscape refers to a single site or location, not just a particular plant or tree in front of your house. What is really being referred to is not just the garden itself but also the surrounding properties and roads and any other natural objects that may be present in such an environment. The distinction between what constitutes your property and what belongs to others is crucial when it comes to following proper maintenance guidelines. Otherwise, those people who live elsewhere on your property may end up having to do some work on their own!

Watering and Fertilizing Tips

One of the most important and overlooked aspects of lawn care is how you water. What you do with your lawn is just as important as what you do with your plants. This includes things like introducing fertilizer, watering regularly and frequently enough to ensure healthy plants, pruning to maintain desirable shapes, or even addressing any negative habits that contribute to unsightly plants.

Some common mistakes:

  1. Overwatering plants causes them to become alkaline. They need a neutral pH, so watering too much will put too much pressure on their roots and leaves and cause them to be too acidic. This can lead to: yellowing leaves; stunted growth; browning leaves; or even death of the plant altogether.

  2. Not watering at all will make the lawn unglazed, which makes it difficult for water to seep into the ground in order to make it through pathways called "pores" in our soil called "water channels." If your lawn is missing those little pores, it will take longer for water to travel through the soil and stay in contact with the roots. This can lead to more water being lost than is necessary over time (as well as reduced quality of your grass).

  3. Over-fertilizing may be a good thing if done with caution. When fertilizing something that isn't planted out in an area where it receives regular rainfall, it takes forever for nutrients from one plant's roots to reach other parts of the plant that are not fertilized or watered yet (e.g., your grass). If you fertilize something that doesn't get enough rain then that part of the plant dies off very quickly because there's nothing left for food.

One way to understand the importance of lawn care and garden maintenance is to imagine the difference between taking a good nap and waking up with a stiff neck.

The same concept holds true regarding lawn care and garden maintenance. When you’re out on your property, you don’t want your lawn looking like it did when you left for work — although I suppose if you worked from home, that would be even more true! A few basic tips can go a long way in ensuring your lawn stays looking its best for years to come.
